Genesis 24: 42 O Lord,…if now you will only make successful the way I am going!
Marcus Aurelius wrote: “Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.” I think today I will make for my self a happy life. Can it be so hard? All that is needed is to change my thinking. I think therefore I am. The writer in Proverbs agrees; For as he thinketh within himself, so is he (23:7 ASV). As I read the passage this morning about the selection of Isaacs’ wife Rebekah, for the first time I actually thought differently about it. I used to think it was simply an arranged marriage, not necessarily bothered by the idea but glad that I was able to make my own choice of husband. Today however I thought exactly opposite because I realized that this was not a marriage arranged by man but rather by God. How wonderful to have your mate chosen by God! There was a lot in the prayer of Isaacs’ servant. He didn’t just pray for any woman. He prayed for someone who was kind to strangers (she didn’t know him, yet gave him something to drink), considerate and caring (she offered to provide water for his camels). When she saw Isaac, she was excited and Isaac loved her very much. No doubt, it becomes a true love story. Who wouldn’t want a mate that is kind, considerate and caring? There is so much we miss out on because we don’t allow God to guide our choices but we have not because we don’t ask (James 4:2-3), and when we do ask our motives are all wrong. So today, as I think therefore I am and today I make a happy life one moment at a time.
