Gate Keepers
Hear the word all… who enter by these gates… Jeremiah 17:19-27 Since the church’s inception, some how the word gatekeeper has managed to conjure up the wrong meaning. We often see gatekeepers as those who have taken on the responsibiltiy of making sure the “right” people enter into spaces where something different and significant (good or bad) happens. I don’t believe gates were ever intended to keep people out or in – but rather to provide access, swinging both ways. In terms of the church, whatever happens within the walls are supposed to be good and beneficial for everyone who chooses to enter in and encourges them to return as they leave, perhaps even bringing back people with them. We are all gatekeepers but not for the purpose of screening people out. Our job as gate keepers is to ensure that the gate always swings open. Guide us O Lord that we may be agents who help lead others into your gates.
Lift up your heads, O gates!
and be lifted up, O ancient doors!
that the King of glory may come in. Psalm 24:7
